Bitterlings

Out of the rich cyprinid group of bitterlings you find in aquarium trade mainly the European bitterling, Rhodeus amarus. Besides, in some cases you may come along with the eastasian species R. ocellatus, which often is confused with the native bitterling. Further species can be obtained only rarely, even though bitterlings are a rich and various group. The term bitterlings here refers to the subfamily Acheilognatinae within the huge family Cyprinidae. The subfamily Acheilognatinae comprises about 10 genera with several tenth of species. Only two of these species (R. amarus and R. colchicus) occur in Europe, while all other bitterlings are distributed in East Asia.

Gudgeons

Gudgeons are cyprinid fishes of the subfamily Gobioninae. Their distribution area compasses most of Eurasia. The opinions about their taxonomy and species number vary considerably, some ichthyologists consider all European gudgeons to belong to one genus (Gobio) with three subgenera (Gobio, Romanogobio and Rheogobio), while others accept these three taxa as valid genera. Here I follow the subgenus attempt, since it is used in the most recent and important publications about gudgeons (Kottelat 1997, Banarescu 1999).

Loaches

Loach fishes of the genera Cobitis and Sabanejewia are my main focus, since they meet both my aquaristic as well as scientific interests. I have a live-fish collection in aquaria and spawn and breed as many of them as possible. The first picture shows the habitus of a Cobitis, the second a Sabanejewia. They are planned to get an own part or the page, but I have to find the time for that.

Other fishes

As you soon may notice from the pictures below, our home aquarium contains a collection of South American fishes, especially ‚common‘ species. That is because they are beautifull and often best suited for keeping at home and do not require special conditions. And that allows you to enjoy the tank instead of looking each evening scared inside which problem awaits you this day.
